11 Expert Tips to Get More Google Reviews (With Photos!) From Customers

So many fencers we work with are shocked by this simple fact: the easiest way to get more Google Reviews for your business is to ask for them! But that's not all – we've got some expert tips up our sleeves to make getting Google Reviews (with photos!) even easier, without ever being pushy or annoying your customers.

  1. Simply Ask for the review, and let them know how important it is for your business!  It’s amazing how many fence contractors simply don’t consistently ask for the review.  But asking is not enough.  Make sure they understand how important it is to your business and how grateful you will be.  This can be done in person, in text, through email, just ask! And if you want the review with photos, make sure you include that as part of your ask!

If you want/need help in some ideas of exact what to write, what to say - let us know.  DotCom has an amazing team of professional content writers!  We can help!

  2. Ask at the project close-out, on-site. If your close-out process includes walking the customer around the project for a final inspection, train your team member to request the review right after a successful walkthrough. Hand them a leave-behind card with your QR review link.  DotCom can get your direct link for you, we can make a QR code for you, we can even design and print the leave-behind card for you!

  3. Ask at the project close-out, on-site (option 2).  Same as above, but instead of handing them a card with a QR code, have a large QR code sticker on the back of your clipboard.  You can ask them to scan it right there and leave the review.  Adding a smiley face or “Thank You” or some other fun/silly graphic makes it more likely that they will scan and leave a review. We can help design this!

  4. Register for The Fence Warranty (Super-Expert Technique!)  [SAM’s FAVORITE TIP!]
The project is finished.  The fence sign has NOT been attached yet, you are carrying it.  On the back of the fence sign is a QR Code sticker (more about this later).  You ask the client to walk the project for final inspection.  You ask them to have their phone with them for this inspection – they'' need it.

At the end of the inspection, in order to register for the WARRANTY, they must scan the QR code mentioned above on the back of the fence sign.  The fence sign now represents the warranty for the fence!  The QR code takes them to a simple form they can fill out in seconds.  (You honestly probably don’t care about this form, but it’s a critical step because everybody is going to want their warranty!).  After they fill-out the warranty, it automatically takes them to … guess where? … Your Google Review screen!

If you REALLY want to supersize this, you can take a picture of them in front of the fence, next to the fence sign, which they can even help install if they want!  A photo of them installing the fence sign - which you would encourage them to post on Facebook!

  5. Leave-behind card + QR: If you do not walk the project with the customer, then leave a card.  Card headline: “Love your new fence? Show it off.” QR opens your review link. Add a tiny 3-step visual: Open → ⭐ Rate → Add photos

  6. 1-3-7 follow-up sequence. Send your review link by SMS/email at 1, 3, and 7 days post-install. Keep it short; include a single line asking for a review and photos (“Tap Add photos to include a quick pic”).  Follow-up is important!  People are busy, they sometimes need to be reminded!

  7. Make it part of the job closeout checklist. Treat the review request like collecting final payment: a named step with accountability (PM/foreman), not a “nice to have.”  If you don’t take it seriously as a fundamental part of your process, your team will not take it seriously either.

  8. Crew photo prompt. Ask customers if you may snap a quick “finished project” pic on their phone so it’s easy for them to add when they leave the review. (You can’t upload for them, but you can make sure they have the photo.)  It’s also great Facebook content, which allows you to tag them or them to tag you!

  9. How-to micro-guide. Include a 3-image carousel in the email showing exactly where Add photos is on Google (desktop & mobile). Link to a short guide if you like.

  10. Thank-you reply that spotlights photos. Publicly thank reviewers who include photos (“Love that gate detail shot!”).  Public recognition and gratitude encourages future customers to leave reviews and to include photos.

  11. Crew Bonus/Tip Included!  At the close-out of the project (whether in person or through text or email) - you can let the homeowner know that the crew will get a $50 tip if they earned a good Google review.  The customer must use the name of the foreman or one of the installers, which you can give to them if they don’t know.  Make sure to give the customer the QR code or direct link!

Very Important!
No incentives!  Don’t offer customers discounts or gifts for reviews.  It’s against Google’s policy. If a competitor can “prove” to Google that you are doing that, or if a customer complains to Google, your profile can be suspended!  Train staff about this!

Side Note:
This is only about customers. You can incentivize your team to score reviews for perks!
