How to Setup a New Google Business Profile

To make a Google Business Profile, head to https://www.google.com/business/

You'll start by entering your business name, choosing a category, and location. Once you've got your profile ready, it's time to fine-tune it with important details that we'll cover in this guide.

What to Include in Your Business Info

  • Make sure your name, address, phone number, hours, and website are fully filled out.
  • Your business name, address, and phone number should match exactly across your Google Business Profile, website, and Facebook page, down to the punctuation and formatting. Consistency helps build trust with Google and boosts your local SEO.
  • Everything under the “Edit Profile” tab should be completed as thoroughly as possible. The more information you give Google, the better it can understand your business, and the more likely you are to stand out from competitors.

Be sure to complete sections like:
    • From the business
    • Accessibility
    • Amenities
    • Parking
    • Service options
    • Don’t skip the “More” categories, every field you fill out helps build trust and visibility.

Choosing the Right Categories

Google defines categories like fence supply sales, railing contractor, deck builder, etc.. These can be used as additional categories on your GBP. Currently, there is no category for gates; those fall under the fence contractor category.

Make sure that you always select a fence contractor and not just "contractor." The more accurate you are, the better your performance will be online.

Tips for a Good Business Description (on Google Business Profile)

DO:

  • Write like a human, like you're explaining your business to a new customer.
  • Start with what you do and who you serve.
  • Talk about experience, specialties, or service areas.
  • Sprinkle in search terms your customers are using, but make sure it still reads smoothly.

DO NOT:

  • Repeat the same phrases over and over just to “rank.”
  • Copy and paste content from other websites or use unedited AI content
  • Avoid “#1” claims, ALL CAPS, or excessive punctuation.
  • Over-explain your services; there's a separate section for that.

✅ Good Example:

“At Floridian Fencing, we specialize in residential and commercial fence installation throughout the Greater Naples area. From privacy wood fences to custom wrought iron gates, our team is known for quality craftsmanship, fast turnarounds, and friendly service. We’ve been proudly serving Florida homeowners for over 15 years.”

❌ Bad Example:

“Floridian Fencing offers fence installation in Naples. Fence repair Naples. Naples wood fences, Naples vinyl fences, Naples privacy fences. Best Naples fencing company cheap and fast.”

Tips for Setting Up Services (on Google Business Profile)

  • List your core services – Only include the services you actually offer.
  • Be specific – Use search-friendly names like “Privacy Fence Installation” or “Chain Link Fence Repair” instead of general terms like “Fence Work.”
  • Use custom descriptions – Add a short blurb to each service that explains what it is and who it’s for.
  • Match your website – Keep the wording similar to how services are listed on your site.

Service Areas Explained

  1. Important Limit
    • Google allows up to 20 service areas per profile.
    • This limit applies whether you list cities, counties, or ZIP codes, they all count toward the maximum number of 20.
  2. Best Practices for Choosing Service Areas
    • Choose cities or regions where you actually do work or actively want more jobs.
    • Don’t list faraway towns just for visibility, this can hurt trust and lead to bad leads or reviews.
  3. Mix and match strategically
    • Use a combination of:
      • Cities (e.g., Orlando)
      • ZIP codes (e.g., 32828)
      • Counties (e.g., Orange County)
    • This helps maximize reach without wasting service area “slots”,
      • ZIP codes are great for pinpointing high-value neighborhoods.
      • Counties are great for wide coverage.
      • Cities give good visibility in search.
  4. Focus on high-volume search areas
    • Prioritize areas where people are actually searching for your services. Use keyword tools or past lead data to help guide these decisions.
    • If you're unsure, we can recommend popular search areas based on your market.
  5. Avoid overlapping unnecessarily
    • Don't add the same zip code for multiple cities.
    • Don’t add cities that are already part of a listed county; use those spaces for new coverage instead.
  6. What Not to Do
    • Don’t add random towns just because they’re nearby – focus on your core service areas.
    • Don’t try to “game the system” by repeating service areas with slightly different formatting.
    • Don’t exaggerate your range, showing up in searches too far away could hurt your reputation and lead to customer complaints (the standard is 2 hours driving distance is the max length from your business location).
